A great book, the city I am living in. The other day I learned another fact, the minimum monthy salary in China is around 960 RMB (96 euros).
Hu Zhihong. Laid-off worker - Shanghainese
"I didn't have anything to do when I was laid off, so I took up dancing as a form of exercise. I take a nap every day. My husband works at a supermarket and our son is a student. We didn't want to spend money on wallpaper so we decorated the room with supermarket fliers. Isn't that normal?"
Tang Zhen An, General Manager - Shanghainese
"Up to now, I'm satisfied with my current life. I feel pressure at work, mainly from peer competition and my own desire to excel. In my spare time, I enjoy taking photographs and collecting western art. I want to do what I can to advance Shanghai's photography industry."
Wang Cuiying. Retired Worker - Shanghainese
"I've been bed-ridden for many years. One of my two sons was laid off and the other is unemployed, too. One daughter-in-law doesn't have a job and the other works as a temp. We can't afford to go to the hospital. I hope my sons and daughters-in-law can find jobs soon. I suffer a lot with this illness."
Chen Weide. Advertising Employee - Malayan
"Shanghai is too big, too crowded and fast-paced. To me it is a place to come to make money and to see the sites. I wish I could live without working. How wonderful it would be to travel all around the world! I love all kinds of shoes and will buy one or two pairs wherever I go. "
Xiao Huang. Migrant Worker - Sichuan Native
"I am working more than 10 hours a day since I came to Shanghai. Life is bitter, but at least I can make a living. I just hope that I will get my wages on time and that I can continue to find jobs like this."
Niu An. Artist - Shanghainese
"I'm a carefree person. I don't lead a regular life. It's too stressful to have dreams or objectives. I'm happy to live alone so I don't have to be responsible for anybody. I have enough money to live the life I want and I don't like pressure. Marriage? It all depends."
Yao Ada. Retired Worker - Shanghainese
"I hope the government will tear down this house soon and give me a better apartment."
What would you do to stay in the USA? A friend of mine sells her work.
Please read on.
Hello Friends,
Many of you know that I have always had a deep connection to America and have imagined living here since I watched Warner Bros. cartoons when I was a child In Australia. And most of you know that I road tripped through the USA for my Master's project (that's how I met many of you!). On my journey I experienced nature in all its forms - including generous people and the sublime landscape. I made connections with like-minds and hearts in my search for HOME and continue to love the joys - and challenges - that life brings. It's about the journey after all!
So, this brings me to my next exciting adventure. My visa is up for renewal in November, 2007 and I need to pay my lawyer and apply by mid October! I can't stay and work in the USA without my visa so I'm asking for your generous support. For a limited time, I am offering a number of my images (portraits and landscapes) for sale at a great price (see details below). Buying a print might not interest you, however. I am also available for portrait commissions or will accept a donation of any amount. Please email me! All proceeds will go towards paying my lawyer's fees.

I love lori's collections on color.
Maybe flickr is the death to all those hidious stock images sites where you cannot find a nice shot for the life of you. What if we could buy directly pictures from their owners?
Hmmm... but flickr makes me a bit nervous since William told me that every time you hang something original (pics, music, videos) up on myspace.com or youtube.com, you lose property and they haven the rights over ownership and distribution. So let's all read the small type before using it to distribute our masterpieces.
In 1989 the Center for Documentary Studies (CDS) invited photographer Wendy Ewald to Durham, North Carolina, to offer a two-week workshop for local schoolchildren. A year later, with encouragement from Durham school administrators and support from CDS, Ewald started the Literacy Through Photography (LTP) program, working in the Durham Public Schools to make photographs the basis for a variety of learning experiences across the curriculum. Since then, LTP has worked with numerous elementary- and middle-school teachers and with hundreds of children of varying ages and backgrounds.
At its core, Literacy Through Photography encourages children to explore their world as they photograph scenes from their own lives, and then to use their images as catalysts for verbal and written expression. Framed around four thematic explorations — self-portrait, community, family, and dreams — LTP provides children and teachers with the expressive and investigative tools of photography and writing for use in the classroom.
Carla and I went to the galleries in Chelsea. We were fascintated by these freaky pics of children. What's wrong with them? Are the heads bigger than normal? Hmmm. Weird. Check them out here.
I am going to be gone for 3 weeks. I will be in Thailand!!!
I leave this open so you can add all the comments and ideas that I will not have those weeks.
Paintings made of grass, that´s the amazing work of Heather Ackroyd and Dan Harvey. "It´s all a process. Typically the process starts in the darkroom where the seeds are germinated in minimal light and warm temperatures. Then they expose plots of seedling grass to light projected through a custom-made negative, which makes the grass grow (or not grow) in contrasting shades-from dull yellow to dark green. After 2 weeks or so, there is a peak in the growing, where as if by divine intervention, whatever image the negative held is captured in full grassy splendor."
Este seguro que no deja a nadie indiferente.

The last issue of Colors Magazine is dedicated to Photo Studios in different parts of the planet.
Check out the website. It has great pictures and insight to the different ways we face the camera.
